Back to Lithuanian-American Community Home Lithuanian Children's Hope In January, 1991, the Lithuanian Humans Services Council of the USA, Inc., a division of the Lithuanian American Community, Inc. established Lithuanian Children's Hope.

What is the purpose of Lithuanian Children's Hope?
The purpose of this not-for-profit organization is to provide Lithuanian children with the opportunity to come to the United States to receive specialized medical treatment which is currently unavailable to them in their home country.

How is such medical treatment delivered, and how is the cost provided?
Agreement are entered into with medical institutions which agree to provide the necessary treatment free-of-charge.

Are there any other costs involved?
The child's medical costs are paid for by the cooperating medical institution. However, all daily living expenses and transportation costs for the child and his or her guardian during the treatment process are the responsibility of Lithuanian Children's Hope. Adminstrative costs make up less than 2% of Lithuanian Children's Hope's total expenses. That is to say, the children receive 98% of every dollar donated to Lithuanian Children's Hope.

Where does the money come from?
The majority of money to support the efforts of Lithuanian Children's Hope comes from the individual donations of people who want to help these kids in need.

How are these children selected?
The children for whom medical treatment is provided are selected according to strict diagnostic guidelines outlined by the cooperating medical institutions. Currently, a committee exists in Lithuania whose medical staff has been specially trained in this selection process. What is the major goal of Lithuanian Children's Hope in the future? Our goal is to provide medical care for at least 30-50 children per year. In addition, we are working to obtain surgical equipment for shipment to Lithuania with the goal of performing simpler procedures in a local hospital, thus helping a greater number of children more economically.

What are the ages of the children?
The ages of children range from 1 1/2 years to 18 years old.

What is the length of the treatment process?
The average hospital stay lasts 10 days. The length of pre- and post-surgical treatment varies, based on the medical condition of each child. The average stay of the child receiving treatment in the United States is nine months.

How are funds raised?
At present there are only two major fundraising efforts conducted during each year: a direct-mail appeal during the month of May and a yearly fundraising special event in December. Where is Lithuanian Children's Hope headquartered? The main office is in Chicago, located at the Lithuanian Human Services Council facilities.

All donations are fully tax deductible.
