RESOLUTION ON THE OCCASION OF LITHUANIA'S INDEPENDENCE DAY

We, the members of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc, of (identify chapter or city) assembled on ( date ) to recognize and honor the 753rd year of Lithuania's statehood, and the 88th year of Lithuania's independence as a democracy which was established on February 16, 1918 in Lithuania's historic capital Vilnius, do hereby find:

Whereas, Lithuania is a member of both NATO and the European Union, and Lithuanian military units are serving together with American troops in Afghanistan and Iraq as allies in the war on global terrorism;

Whereas, the United States and many other countries never recognized the forced incorporation and illegal annexation of Lithuania by the former Soviet Union in June 1940, and continued to maintain diplomatic relations with the legal representatives of independent Lithuania;

Whereas, the government and parliament of the Russian Federation continue to actively oppose Lithuania's re-integration with Western democracies while both corporate and criminal interests from Lithuania's eastern neighbors are undermining Lithuania's sovereignty;

Whereas, the Russian government is using natural gas as a political weapon against its neighbors Western neighbors, including Ukraine;

Now, therefore, be it Resolved that, we, supporters of a democratic Lithuania--

(1) congratulate the people of Lithuania on the occasion of their Day of Independence, the 16th of February;

(2) urge the United States Congress and the Bush Administration to deepen the U.S. bi-lateral relationship with Lithuania by resuming technical assistance programs in Lithuania, restoring cultural and educational exchange programs with Lithuania, restoring US broadcasts to Lithuania, providing continued military assistance, and expanding trade and investment between the United States and Lithuania;

(3) urge President George W. Bush to initiate a suspension of Russia's membership in the Group of Eight (G-8) industrial democracies until Russia restores democratic practices such as freedom of the press, and stops using energy as a political weapon;

(4) thank the government and people of Lithuania for joining with the United States in its war on global terrorism, and a special thanks to the men and women of Lithuania's armed forces who are risking their lives alongside American troops in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo and Bosnia;

(5) demand that the government of the Russian Federation denounce the infamous Molotov-Ribbentrop treaty, and as the self-proclaimed successor state of the Soviet Union make restitution to Lithuania for the illegal 50 year Soviet occupation of Lithuania.

We, authorize the officers of the ( local ) chapter of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc. and the organizers of this assembly to transmit a copy of this resolution, once adopted, to appropriate U.S. government representatives, our State representatives, the embassies of Lithuania and the Russian Federation, and the national office of the Lithuanian-American Community, Inc.
