Invitation

The Academic and Cultural Council and the Lithuanian American Community National Executive Committee invite you to participate in the Twelfth Lithuanian World Symposium on Arts and Sciences, which will take place May 21 – 25, 2003 in the World Lithuanian Center in Lemont, Illinois. This Symposium will be one of the most meaningful and content-rich events to be organized outside of Lithuania by Lithuanian and Lithuanian émigré academics.  The Symposium will be an opportunity for academic exchange between Lithuanian academics from both sides of the Atlantic and also an opportunity to discuss how such Symposia may support academic pursuits in Lithuania and positively influence Lithuania and its people.

The Symposium will focus on topics that are important to Lithuania and its future, eg. biochemistry, biotechnology, environmental protection, “brain drain”, information technology, medicine, economic influences on Lithuania from a global perspective and others. Each eveningplenary sessions that focus on topics of great importance to both Lithuania and Lithuanian émigrés will be featured.

Lithuania Minor and its future will be the subject of discussion on Thursday evening. Friday‘s plenary sesion will be a discussion of the problem of Lithuania‘s „brain drain“: is this good or bad for Lithuania and what are potential consequences.  Saturday will be devoted to Lithuania‘s armed forces. The Lithuanian Army will be presented to symposium participants in the plenary session, with army orchestra marches, live views of the armed forces, Lithuanian defence achievements, lectures about academics in the development of the armed forces and defence strategies, and a visual overview of Lithuania. The symposium academic sessions will conclude on Sunday with a plenary discussions of broad scope that will address topics of Lithuania's future with the European union, NATO, with neighboring countries and especially on the relationship between Lithuania and its émigré communities.

Symposium participants will include not only high-level Lithuanian and émigré academics, but also high level Lithuanian government, armed forces and diplomatic officials as well as Lithuanian-American Community ahd Lithuanian World Commuinity leaders. They will speak not only on the topics listed above, but will also address sociological topics.

Papers will be organized into the following sessions:

  1. Lithuanian language, literature, folklore, customs, etc.
  2. History
  3. Sciences (Physics, chemistry, biology, biotechnology, biochemistry, neurology, etc.)
  4. Law
  5. Engineering and architecture
  6. Medical sciences
  7. Information sciences
  8. Management/Marketing
  9. Economics
  10. Sociology
  11. Political Sciences
  12. Environmental Sciences
  13. Psychology
  14. Lithuanian academics and society

The academic sessions will begin Wednesday morning and will end Saturday evening. Plenary sessions will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings. The final plenary session will begin Sunday after lunch. The Symposium will end on Sunday with a gala banquet.

All Lithuanians, from near and far are cordially invited to attend and actively participate in the symposium.
