You are cordially invited!
The
Seattle Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian communities are jointly
sponsoring the "Mare Balticum" Dinner Cruise on Saturday, October 25th
in Seattle. The 3-hour cruise on Elliot Bay is the main fundraiser
this year for the Baltic Studies Program at the University of
Washington.
We are celebrating the 10th year of the founding of the Program. The
generous gifts of many donors in the past have created a program that
is unique in
America -- the only one that teaches all three Baltic languages. The
money raised in the past now guarantees that Lithuanian, Latvian and
Estonian will be taught at the UW, but the endowment does not pay for
the courses in Baltic history and culture which will disappear without
further support. These classes in particular attract new students to
the language program. In the past, the Program has been heavily
subsidized by the University, but we can no longer rely on their
support given the number of budget cuts being made by the legislature.
In an era where state government is constantly reducing its funding of
education we cannot assume that the University will continue its
support of history and culture classes ad infinitum.
We invite you to join us for this cruise of celebration of ten
successful years of Baltic Studies.
The
$100 per person event includes a cruise on Elliot Bay, a dinner, an
almost bottomless bottle of wine, music, dancing and a most
interesting keynote
address. Most importantly -- $50 of your $100 ticket price will be
donated to the Baltic Studies program, and you will receive a
tax-deductible receipt from
the UW after the event.
All in all, the event is the bargain of the year: $50 per person for 3
hours on the water dining, schmoozing and dancing -- and $50 per
person going to the Baltic Studies program! Music for entertainment
and dancing will be provided by an Estonian band from Portland,
Oregon.
The keynote lecturer is Carl Bildt, Prime Minister of Sweden, 1991 -
1994 (bio. at http://www.bildt.net).
The lecture also marks the ten-year anniversary of Bildt's article,
"The Baltic Litmus Test: Revealing Russia's True Colors" (Foreign
Affairs, Sept/Oct 1994, 72-85) which demonstrated the importance of
the Baltic countries in understanding Russian foreign relations
policies. His talk that evening may be the most important speech given
on the Baltics in the United States this year.
WE ARE ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS UNTIL
OCT. 15 on a space available basis. If you are not able to join us
please consider making a donation.
Boarding on the "Royal Argosy" at Pier 56 on Alaskan Way will be from
6 to 7 pm. The boat will sail at 7 pm and return dockside at 10 pm.
